HWLE Lawyers shift Bargain Car Rentals into new gear with Tokyo Century deal

Firm News

HWLE Lawyers has advised on the sale of Bargain Car Rentals to Tokyo‑listed Tokyo Century Corporation, marking what is understood to be one of the largest M&A transaction led from Tasmania.

Tokyo Century is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange with a market capitalisation of approximately AUD 9.15 billion. It operates globally across auto leasing, car rental and financing, with businesses in Asia, the USA and Australia.

The transaction involved Tokyo Century acquiring a 100 per cent interest in Bargain Car Rentals, one of Australia’s leading independent rental vehicle providers.

The deal was notable for its complexity and national footprint, spanning assets and operations across multiple Australian jurisdictions and requiring close coordination across corporate, property and planning practice groups.

The HWLE Lawyers corporate team was led by Adam Goldner (Partner), with support from Vien Tran (Senior Associate), Jefferson Nguon (Associate) and Emily Hale (Associate). The property team was led by Matthew Powell (Partner) and supported by Cait Clifton (Special Counsel) and Hailey Holloway (Solicitor).

Specialist advice was also provided by Matthew Craven (Partner), Mark Etherington (Partner), Johnny Ho (Partner), Thomas Kim (Partner), Anthony Lawrence (Partner), Andrew Natoli (Partner), Peter Staniszewski (Partner), Cam Steele (Partner) and Teresa Torcasio (Partner).

Commenting on the deal, Adam Goldner said:
