Martin Downing

Martin is the NSW Group Head of the firm’s Real Estate and Projects Group.

He has extensive experience across all aspects of real estate transactions and all asset classes, having acted for many of Australia’s largest owners and developers of commercial real estate. Since joining HWL Ebsworth in 2005, Martin’s clients have been able to access his wealth of experience whilst enjoying the benefits of HWL Ebsworth’s competitive and compelling financial model.

Many of Martin’s clients have been with him for over 20 years, drawn to his commercial acumen, attention to detail, engagement and his ability to identify and negotiate appropriate risk allocation.

Having developed a dedicated team of skilled and service oriented lawyers and support staff, Martin is able to resource major capital transactions and service the constant demands of large real estate portfolios whilst delivering quality outcomes in a timely manner.

He has particular skills in capital transactions, complex development agreements for leases and joint ventures.

  • Coombes Property Group on the acquisition of 28 O’Connell Street, Sydney and the development of the Gateway Shopping Centre, Darwin;
  • MTAA on the divestment of the Met Centre, 60 Margaret Street, Sydney;
  • Cbus Property on the acquisition and development of Inglis Stables Newmarket Randwick and the acquisitions of David Jones 77 Market Street, Sydney; the Vibe Hotel 88 Alfred Street, Milsons Point; and 12 Langston Place, Epping;
  • Longhurst Property on the acquisition of the Edgecliff Centre, Edgecliff;
  • Competitive Foods on Hungry Jack’s national on-going site acquisitions;
  • Domino’s on their national on-going site acquisitions; and
  • Mirvac on the acquisitions of DHL Altona North distribution centre and the Thales Rydalmere factory and on-going industrial leasing.
