Chris Morey

Chris Morey is a Special Counsel in HWL Ebsworth’s Workplace Relations and Safety team.

Chris has broad experience in employment and workplace relations matters, having worked in this area both in private law firms, in in-house roles, and in an industry association. His work includes all aspects of the employment relationship, advising and representing employers across a wide range of industries on workplace legal issues, including industrial & employment, enterprise bargaining, workplace health & safety, workers compensation and discrimination matters. His practice includes both advice and representing clients in litigious matters.

Before joining HWL Ebsworth, Chris has worked in in-house roles for Flinders University and the University of Adelaide. He also worked for the Motor Trade Association of SA/NT, a registered employer industry association. Prior to these in-house roles, he spent many years in private practice, acting for both employers and employees in a wide range of industries, across a range of jurisdictions.

Experience

Chris’ experience includes advising:

  • The University of Adelaide on employment and industrial relations issues arising from the merger with the University of South Australia to form the new Adelaide University;
  • two universities, numerous local councils, as well as other large clients, on enterprise bargaining, both in the Federal and state systems;
  • various clients with advice and representation relating to unfair dismissal and general protections claims before the Fair Work Commission and Federal Court
  • Flinders University on a long-running general protections claim brought by a former employee against both the University and specific senior employees;
  • The University of Adelaide on a long-running sexual harassment claim brought by an employee against both the University and another employee;
  • a confidential client on underpayment claims, including remediation, rectificaiton of future pay rates and self-disclosure to the Fair Work Ombudsman;
  • various clients on managing and responding to requests for information or investigations by regulators or enquiry agencies;
  • numerous motor trade industry clients on isues relating to casual employees, award interpretation and payment of superannuation;
  • a confidential client with advice and representation on a prosecution by the regulator related to a workplace accident which unfortunately resulted in a fatality; and
  • numerous IT industry clients on setting up their employment and pay structures to ensure both legal compliance and flexibility.
