Alan Chiang

Alan joined the firm in 2012 and since that time has developed a specialisation in construction and engineering projects. His practice is largely focused on residential and commercial property development (acting for Principals, Contractors, Subcontractors and industry Consultants) but he also has vast experience in the engineering and infrastructure space.

His skills include drafting procurement and contract documentation, advising on risk allocation, assisting with contract negotiations and providing claims advice (including in relation to the Security of Payment legislation).

Alan has significant experience in drafting contracts using the Australian Standards and has extensive experience with a number of delivery models including construct-only, design and construct, design services, professional services and maintenance.

Experience

Alan’s experience includes advising:

  • Various large international & national contracting entities on drafting and preparing suites of head contract, subcontract and consultancy agreements; drafting and negotiating downstream subcontracts, supply agreements, minor works and services agreements; and contract interpretation and claims including adjudication applications, tribunal and court applications and arbitration in construction and infrastructure projects;
  • A major pipeline subcontractor on a private arbitration in relation to a $22m contractual dispute in Queensland;
  • Various principals and owners (including Councils) on preparing project and tender documentation (including the preparation of a tender version project agreement for the construction of a large processing facility);
  • One of Australia’s largest volume home builders on contract administration, interpretation and claims advice;
  • Various property developers on drafting building contracts for various residential developments including: The Pelham, Parkview Apartments, The Keys, Gramercy, Viola, Summit, Patch, Granton and MAST; and
  • A university college on a construction dispute concerning its redevelopment project.
