HWL Ebsworth eyes continued growth in IT and IP with recent partner appointment

29 September 2016

Leading independent Australian law firm HWL Ebsworth Lawyers has announced that it has appointed Matthew Craven as a partner within its Information Technology and Intellectual Property team in Melbourne.

Matthew joins HWL Ebsworth from Corrs Chambers Westgarth where he was a Special Counsel.

Matthew has wide-ranging experience in technology law and intellectual property.

Matthew specialises in large scale technology, IT and telecommunications projects (including IT & business process outsourcing, software and system implementations and technology procurement), privacy and data protection.

He also advises companies, research organisations and start-ups in relation to the development, protection and licensing of intellectual property, joint venture arrangements, distribution arrangements, franchising, advertising and trade practices, technology disputes and general commercial matters.

Juan Martinez, Managing Partner of HWL Ebsworth, said “Matthew’s skills and background compliment our existing Information Technology and Intellectual Property practice spread across eight offices. His experience in advising clients on complex technology and intellectual property related matters, as well as his industry knowledge and strategic approach, will be incredibly valuable to HWL Ebsworth and our clients.”

I am particularly excited that we continue to be presented with opportunities to recruit some of Australia’s most impressive up and coming talent from firms that do not appear to be able to match our ability to offer a straight forward and transparent path to partnership. Matthew is the latest in a string of such appointments for HWL Ebsworth, and follows closely behind the recruitment of Josh Messing and Sam Dundas from Herbert Smith Freehills and Sophie Given from Sparke Helmore. We will continue to offer technically and commercially gifted lawyers an opportunity to reach their potential as a partner in the absence of any artificial glass ceilings,” added Juan.

Note to Editors:

HWL Ebsworth is the largest legal partnership in Australia according to the most recent partnership surveys published by The Australian and the Australian Financial Review and is the only commercial law firm with an office in every Australian State and Territory.
