HWLE helps secure long-term future of South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute
Firm News
HWLE has advised the South Australian government in a landmark agreement with Adelaide University in relation to SAHMRI (South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute). Under the agreement, Adelaide University will assume financial and governance control of SAHMRI, establishing one of the world’s most advanced research corridors along Adelaide’s North Terrace.
The agreement will bring the institute’s internationally recognised programs closer to Adelaide University’s research strengths and is a crucial step forward in securing the future of health and medical research in the state.
This alignment will facilitate the acceleration of vital research into areas like cancer precision medicine, maternal and child health, health inequities for indigenous peoples, and other scientific developments. It will also provide greater financial certainty for researchers, staff, students, funding bodies and industry partners, and strengthen the State’s ability to attract research investment and grants.
Treasurer of South Australia, Tom Koutsantonis, said “The agreement will significantly benefit South Australia’s research and development capability. It secures the future of one of our most important research institutions and demonstrates our commitment to ensuring South Australia remains a national leader in health and medical research, innovation and discovery.”
HWLE Chair of Partners, Jamie Restas, said “HWLE were pleased to have supported the South Australian Government in facilitating the reform of SAHMRI, which will provide the platform for the continued advancement of medical research in the State”.
HWLE’s multi disciplined team was led by Jamie Restas with assistance from partners Wendy Jones, Adam Ludlow, Clare Raimondo, Cam Steele, Peter Campbell, Peter Staniszewski and Tim Stokes, and corporate team members Samantha Reidy, Aleina Dearden and Maddison Gain.
