Lisa Gooneratne

Lisa has extensive experience in personal injury insurance law, in a variety of areas. Lisa acts for both private insurers and Government agencies, in the areas of public liability, workers compensation, medical negligence, coronial inquests, medical disciplinary matters, and motor vehicle accidents. Lisa also acts for a self-insurers, in relation to personal injury claims.

Lisa has extensive experience in managing un-litigated and litigated claims and takes a practical and commercial approach to matters to assist clients to achieve a satisfactory resolution. Lisa’s experience includes appearing in the ACT Magistrates and Supreme Courts, the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and the Federal Circuit Court.

Lisa is actively involved in the ACT legal community, being a former chair of the Young Lawyers Committee and currently a Commissioner and Board member of the ACT Legal Aid Commission.

Experience

Lisa’s experience includes advising:

  • Private insurers in respect of a motor vehicle accident claim for a plaintiff who suffered traumatic injuries including a traumatic amputation of the right arm;
  • A medical practitioner who is the subject of multiple complaints made to the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Association, and successfully sought review of an Immediate Action Decision in the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal;
  • Australian Government agencies in respect of claims made pursuant to the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 and associated proceedings in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal;
  • Investigations: Part of a team selected by the scheme administrator to investigate the compliance of a self-insurer with the requirements of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988; and
  • Large scale litigation on matters involving multiple defendants, indemnity and insurance issues, significant quantum assessments, and complex contribution claims.
