Iain McLaren

Iain McLaren is a Special Counsel in HWL Ebsworth’s national commercial group, based in Melbourne.

Iain specialises in information technology law, privacy, data protection, intellectual property, and general commercial contracting.

Iain has over 15 years of experience in private practice and in-house. In addition to working in private practice, Iain previously worked in-house at Australia Post in relation to technology, data, and financial services matters, at ANZ Bank and Hewlett Packard, and on secondment at Energy Australia.

Experience

Iain’s experience includes advising:

  • A major Australian Bank in relation to “cloud”, government, shared computing, procurement, and outsourcing, projects;
  • An Australian Commonwealth Government entity in relation to the decommissioning of a significant customer-facing service available to all Australians that was integrated with other Federal, State and Local Government entities and commercial organisations;
  • An international toll road owner and operator with interests in Australia and North America in relation to this organisation’s outsourcing of its information technology systems, including providing advice in relation to regulatory requirements in relation to traffic management and traffic enforcement;
  • An Australian Commonwealth Government entity in relation to that entity’s commercialisation of its data, including the privacy implications of this data commercialization;
  • A major Australian bank in relation to multiple multiple global Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) projects across the organisation involving service providers providing services from multiple countries to this bank’s customer entities in multiple (up to 31) countries;
  • iGATE, a global Indian based outsourcing company, in relation to the business process (and IT) outsourcing of the Victorian Government Retail Tenancy Bond Authority systems;
  • A major Australian energy company with the development of their end-to-end customer dispute resolution process; and
  • A major Australian Bank in relation to the PEXA eConveyancing implementation, which allows property settlements to be conducted electronically (i.e. over the internet) rather than face-to-face.
