HWLE was able to utilise its vast health expertise to act pro bono for The Australian Academy of Science at the Second Kathleen Folbigg Inquiry.
Kathleen Folbigg was convicted in 2003 of the murder of 3 of the children and the manslaughter of another child.
The Academy was given leave to assist this Inquiry as an independent scientific advisor. Their leave permitted them to be involved in the selection of experts and identification of the issues the experts should address, demonstrating the importance of the role that independent scientific advice can have within the justice system, particularly where complex and emerging science is to be considered.
In closing submissions on 26 April 2023, Counsel Assisting advised the Inquiry that, based on the evidence before it, reasonable doubt could be found. We now await the findings of His Honour Tom Bathurst.
