Karen Keogh
Karen leads the National Pro Bono Practice Group at HWL Ebsworth. She acts for a wide variety of individual and not for profit clients on a pro bono basis.
Her specific area of expertise is as a Health Industry lawyer. She has over 25 years’ experience in Australia and England, being qualified in both jurisdictions, and having acted for a diverse range of clients including professional health bodies, health charities, medical defence organisations, royal colleges, web based digital health companies, hospitals, government bodies, individual doctors and other health care professionals.
Karen specialises in corporate and commercial work including corporate governance, privacy, regulatory matters, professional conduct, commercial contracts, industrial and workplace matters, risk management and coronial inquiries.
Karen is named in Best Lawyers™ Australia 2023 edition for Health & Aged Care Law and Medical Negligence and has been since 2014. She is a member of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission Consultation Panel, the International Association of Privacy Professionals and the NSW Law Society Privacy and Data Law Committee.

Karen’s experience includes advising:
- Charitable & Not for Profit Organisations on establishment, corporate governance, regulatory, privacy and general commercial issues;
- Health Care Practitioners in industrial matters including VMO and Staff Specialist disputes, hospital and workplace investigations, HCCC complaints, employment contracts and restraint of trade litigation. In professional conduct matters including HCCC complaints and investigations, Medical Council inquiries and NCAT hearings, and general medico legal issues;
- Health Start Ups and Digital Health on contracting arrangements, privacy, data breach, website and health app terms and conditions, cybersecurity and liability issues; and
- Medical Practices on the sale and purchase of medical practices, service agreements, contracting arrangements and competition law.
