Sonya Kroon

Sonya has practised as a commercial lawyer for over 30 years and specialised in the Construction and Infrastructure industry for over 20 years.

Her projects span a diverse range across a number of industry sectors including industrial, mixed residential/retail/commercial developments, manufacturing, FMCG, retail, marine infrastructure, waste, airports, government infrastructure, roads, recreational and other civic facilities.

Sonya has particular expertise in procurement and tender processes, construction and infrastructure project documentation, project administration and delivery.

Sonya has represented clients on both contentious and non-contentious matters and is highly regarded for her ability to facilitate projects, and her pragmatic approach and accurate, commercial advice.

Sonya is listed as a Recommended Lawyer for Front end construction, Infrastructure and Major Projects in Doyles Guide to the Legal Profession 2024.

Experience

Sonya’s recent experience includes advising:

  • Cbus Property (property arm of Cbus Superannuation) on various projects including:

    • 77 Market Street: a joint development with Scentre for the construction of mixed retail/commercial and residential in the heart of the CBD;
    • Newmarket Randwick: a 5 hectare development in 3 phases of mixed retail/residential in Randwick comprising 19 buildings, accommodating 642 residential dwellings and approx. 2,390m2 of retail uses (being the former Inglis Stable complex); and
    • East Walker Street: a luxury 2 tower development in North Sydney, incorporating components of affordable housing and communal and recreational amenities.
  • George Weston Foods (a division of Associated British Foods Group) on the procurement of large scale manufacturing facilities in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia;
  • GPT – acting on the retail expansion of Rouse Hill Town Centre, comprising an additional 10,600m2 of GLFA;
  • Metcash on the development of large scale automated distribution facilities in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to service Metcash’s supply chain;
  • Newcastle Airport on early works and main works tenders for expansion of the terminal facility as well as projects within the industrial Aerospace facility to service the Department of Defence and related airport operations; and
  • Department of Industry (Transport for NSW Panel) – Eden Wharf redevelopment – this project was classified as State Significant Infrastructure which will ultimately enable berthing of cruise shops of 325m in length to the port of Eden. Sonya advised in the planning and development phases including the procurement phases of business relocation, engineering consultancies, dredging, marine infrastructure, port protection and facility operation and management.
