Fiona Meara

Fiona acts for insurers in the defence of civil claims.

Fiona has over 20 years’ experience as a solicitor in Queensland working predominantly in private practice. She also has experience working as a principal legal officer for the State of Queensland. Fiona has a broad range of skills and experience in defending complex claims during the pre-proceedings process and when necessary to trial. Fiona uses her previous experience as a Registered Nurse when considering medical causation issues and briefing medical experts.

Fiona utilises her skills to obtain cost effective and commercial outcomes for her clients.

Experience

Fiona’s experience includes advising:

  • Various insurers and organizations as well as State and Territory governments in management of claims and litigation involving sensitive claims arising out of allegations of child sexual abuse;
  • Australian and international insurers on statutory interpretation, indemnity issues, recovery of costs from unsuccessful plaintiffs, defence of recovery claims, issues pertaining to capacity and administration and management fees, rehabilitation requirements in catastrophic personal injuries (including claims where the injured person resides overseas), vicarious liability and quantifying damages in complex personal injuries claims.  Fiona has had conduct of matters in the pre-proceedings stage and during litigation and trial involving professional indemnity claims, public liability claims, legal liability claims (including a dependency claim pertaining to a marine accident), product liability claims, occupier’s liability claims, property damage claims, compulsory third party claims, dog bite claims, sexual and physical abuse claims, and demurrage claims; and
  • Government Departments on the interpretation of legislation, risk management, disclosure issues and privacy issues.
