Brendan Maher

Brendan is a Special Counsel in our Sydney Insurance Practice Group who practises in liability law. He represents insurers and government agencies in claims involving work injury damages, recoveries and public liability.

Brendan specialises in multi-party and catastrophic injury litigation, summarising factually detailed evidence and providing clear, concise advice in complex claims.

Brendan has over 35 years in extensive litigation and alternative dispute resolution. His wide-ranging experience in commercial and general legal work allows him to bring a wider perspective to personal injury insurance claims.

Experience

Brendan’s experience includes advising:

  • A well-known national insurer on its national workers compensation pilot for catastrophic injury claims;
  • WorkCover on section 151Z recovery pilot schemes, including the commencement of the section 151Z recovery claim in J Blackwood & Son v Skilled Engineering [2008] NSWCA 142;
  • A receiver in commercial litigation, appearing in person for the last six days of a hearing against senior counsel in the Federal Court, obtaining a judgment in excess of $4.6 million; Anderson Formrite Pty Ltd v Baulderstone Pty Ltd (No 7) [2010] FCA 921;
  • A person investigated for alleged corrupt conduct, appearing in person in a five-week ICAC hearing; NSW public sector – allegations concerning security companies and public authorities (Operation Tilga); and
  • A person appealing a conviction on an assault charge, appearing in person in the District Court of NSW and obtaining an acquittal.
