A year in review – Administrative law in 2021 and the year ahead in 2022

Market Insights

As all levels of government in Australia respond to new policy challenges, we see administrative law undergoing a period of significant change. The past 12 months have witnessed the ongoing responses to COVID-19 and natural disasters, as well as a number of Royal Commissions and inquiries. We have observed government playing an increasingly central part in Australians’ lives, and administrative law is keeping pace with new forms of government activity.

On 9 March 2022, Michael Palfrey, Will Sharpe, and Neil Cuthbert presented Administrative law in 2021 and the year ahead in 2022 at HWL Ebsworth’s Australian Government In-House Counsel Webinar Series. They prepared a detailed paper to accompany the presentation which discusses trends and developments in public law over the past 12 months and into 2022. The paper provides a useful reference point for government lawyers and decision-makers.
