Sue Barnes

Sue has specialised in workplace relations and employment law for over 20 years. She is known for her commercially pragmatic and solutions focused advice. Sue has extensive experience in advising employers on managing ill or injured workers, senior executive terminations and restructure of business. She regularly conducts workplace investigations into misconduct and defends Fair Work claims such as unfair dismissal and general protections. Sue’s practise also includes the preparation of employment contracts and policies.

Sue assists employers across a broad range of industries. Including banking and finance, health, recruitment, retail and professional services.

Sue was described in the 2017 Asia Pacific Legal 500 as a “first class lawyer” with “an engaging manner” and in a previous year was described as “superb”.


Sue’s experience includes advising:

  • A multi-national client with restructure of multiple lines of business;
  • Retail clients on investigations into allegations of breach of sexual harassment and drug and alcohol policies by senior executive;
  • Insurance companies by providing advise and negotiations of claim by very long tenured employee resulting in settlement of the matter for a fraction of the amount claimed;
  • Not for profit with transfer of business issues; and
  • Recruitment clients by defended general protections claim without payment of settlement.
