Alexander Georgeopoulos
Alexander is Special Counsel in the Health Group with over 15 years’ experience advising health practitioners, medical defence organisations, public and private hospitals, and other health facilities in a broad range of health related matters.
He has extensive experience representing and defending doctors and hospitals in medical negligence cases filed in the Supreme Court and District Court of NSW. This includes managing highly complex, valuable and catastrophic claims on behalf of doctors and hospitals, covering a broad spectrum of medical cases. He has also successfully represented clients in the NSW Court of Appeal and the High Court of Australia.
Alexander acts for individual doctors in disciplinary matters including complaints made to the Health Care Complaints Commission and the Medical Council of NSW. He advises doctors throughout the complaints process, assists in navigating the regulatory framework, appears for doctors in disciplinary hearings and advises on the operation of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law.
Alexander advises health practitioners in relation to employment matters including internal hospital investigations pursuant to NSW Health policies. He has provided risk management and policy advice to NSW Health, Local Health Districts, doctors, Medical Centres and private medical indemnity insurers.
Experience
Alexander’s experience includes:
- Medical Negligence: Management of catastrophic and valuable claims such as cerebral palsy, quadriplegia and brain damage cases on behalf both hospitals and private doctors (on instruction from private medical indemnity insurers). These include highly complex and multi-million dollar cases involving multiple plaintiffs and defendants;
- Coronial Matters: Represented the interests of hospitals and doctors in large and complex coronial inquests involving significant media attention, multiple interested parties and witnesses, sensitive policy areas, and the potential for subsequent civil proceedings;
- Disciplinary and Regulatory Matters: Appearing for health practitioners in disciplinary hearings including Professional Standards Committee hearings, and proceedings pursuant to Section 150;
- Medicare: Assisted doctors in Medicare matters including advising on compliance with MBS requirements and assisting practitioners throughout the PSR process; and
- Privacy Law, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) and Discrimination Matters: Advises on a broad range of health related privacy matters. Represented the Department of Forensic Medicine in a series of discrimination matters in NCAT, the Supreme Court of NSW, and in the High Court of Australia.
