Martin Downing

Martin is NSW Practice Group Head of the firm’s Real Estate and Projects Group and has 30 plus years experience in large real estate transactions in all asset classes. His particular interests include: joint ventures; sales and acquisitions; pre-commitment development agreements for lease; and project delivery and development management arrangements.

Martin acts for many of Australia’s largest owners, developers and users of real estate, many of whom have been referring work to him for over 20 years. Clients appreciate Martin’s commercial acumen, attention to detail, strategic insights and strong engagement. These attributes enable him to quickly identify and strategically deal with risk in commercial real estate transactions.

Since joining HWL Ebsworth in 2005, Martin has grown a dedicated and service oriented team of lawyers and developed a responsive and complementary network both within the firm and externally. These resources enable Martin to deliver quality and timely outcomes for clients.

Martin and his team have also developed a ‘leasing centre of excellence’ through which they provide efficient and tailored legal services to national portfolio tenant clients as well as landlord clients. In doing so, the team have developed a number of IT solutions to streamline workflows and reporting for clients.

  • Stockland/Fife Capital on joint development arrangements for multiple industrial assets located in NSW and Queensland;
  • Aoyuan International on joint development arrangements with Capital Bluestone across multiple NSW developments;
  • Cbus Property on the acquisition and development of Newmarket Randwick, the Langston, Epping and 77 Market Street, Sydney;
  • Ampol on the redevelopments of Pheasants Nest (M5)(Nth and Sth bound) and Eastern Creek (M4)(East and West bound);
  • Coombes Property Group and Challenger Life on the joint development of the Gateway Shopping Centre, Palmerston North, NT; and
  • Various clients on numerous commercial asset transactions including 28 O’Connell Street, 60 Margaret Street, Sydney, the Edgecliff Centre, 100 Broadway, Broadway and 20 Hunter Street, Sydney.
